Homeschool Programs

Registration Instructions:

Pre-registration required. Submit our registration & medical forms with cash/check payment to H.C. Parks. Mail to P.O. Box 2900, Flemington, NJ 08822 or drop off at the Hunterdon County Arboretum, 1020 State Highway 31, Lebanon, NJ 08833. Children must be accompanied by an adult.  

Moon & Other Features

  • Date: Wednesday, February 1
  • Time: 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM
  • Location: Hoffman Park 
  • Ages: 7 and up (children must be accompanied by an adult)
  • Cost: $3 per child; accompanying adult attends for free (pre-registration required)
  • Instructor: Tom Sheppard, Chief Park Naturalist
  • Class size: 14 children

This night, we will use the telescope to look at objects beyond the solar system and then look at the closest object to us. Focus will be on the life of a star. We will view the famous Orion Nebula, the Pleiades Star Cluster, and other objects if time permits. We will then close the program by taking a close look at the Moon. 

Waterfowl & the Marsh

  • Date: Wednesday, March 8
  • Time: 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM
  • Location: Assiscong Marsh 
  • Ages: 7 and up (children must be accompanied by an adult)
  • Cost: free! (pre-registration required)
  • Class size: 14 children
  • Instructor: Tom Sheppard, Chief Park Naturalist

These sessions of the Homeschool Series will take participants on field trips around the County as we focus on birds and birding through the spring season. Binoculars will be available to borrow for each session. Our first stop will be the Assiscong Marsh as we focus on birding basics and our local waterfowl.

Songbirds & the River

  • Date: Wednesday, April 19
  • Time: 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM
  • Location: Sunnyside
  • Ages: 7 and up (children must be accompanied by an adult)
  • Cost: free! (pre-registration required)
  • Class size: 14 children
  • Instructor: Tom Sheppard, Chief Park Naturalist

These sessions of the Homeschool Series will take participants on field trips around the County as we focus on birds and birding through the spring season. Binoculars will be available to borrow for each session. This stop will be along the South Branch of the Raritan River as we look for resident songbirds and early migrants moving along the edge habitat of the park and the river corridor.

Migrants & the Grassland

  • Date: Wednesday, May 31
  • Time: 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM
  • Location: Hoffman Park
  • Ages: 7 and up (children must be accompanied by an adult)
  • Cost: free! (pre-registration required)
  • Class size: 14 children
  • Instructor: Tom Sheppard, Chief Park Naturalist

These sessions of the Homeschool Series will take participants on field trips around the County as we focus on birds and birding through the spring season. Binoculars will be available to borrow for each session. Our last stop will be at Hoffman Park as we walk the park looking for migrants and our breeding grassland species. Please note that an extra half hour is built into this session.
